Adrian D.Duerson, is an English teacher who enjoys studying history, reading, listening to music, travelling, and shopping. He has a bachelor’s degree in History at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. He has tutored many kids and teenagers in both English and Social Studies as an undergraduate student with the organization called Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies at Wabash College. In addition, he has volunteered and worked with teens for an urban youth program called Freewheelin’ Bikes Community which is located in the central region of Indianapolis, Indiana.
This lecture is about black history and popular culture in America. I will start by explaining the racial stereotypes through films and hip-hop/rap culture to uncover the mainstream perspective of African-Americans. More than often, black history is undermined due the lack of attention in textbooks of history. Thus, there are many misconceptions and misrepresentations of black culture due to the history of slavery and media propaganda. In essence, I hope to broaden one’s viewpoint of African-Americans and to inspire folks through an Afrocentric lens of the life struggles and achievements of many black men and women that have devoted their lives in order to make a better world for humanity.
